Additions Coming to the Town of Plattsburgh's Parks, Including a Story Book Trail

Story Book Trail Coming to Cadyville Recreation Park This Summer

Plattsburgh, NY - The town of Plattsburgh is gearing up for the warmer months ahead. Just last weekend an extensive clean up was held to clean up from the harsh winter.

Now, after a year in the works a story book trail is coming to the Cadyville Recreation Park. The idea came from a father who lives in the town of Plattsburgh after visiting a similar trail in New Hampshire.

"Luckily we came up with a grant. From Stewart's a Holiday Match Grant for a thousand dollars. We have been able to purchase the story book pads, basically where the book will go," according to Erin Pangborn, the recreation program coordinator for the Town of Plattsburgh.

Additionally the Department of Parks and Recreation will be contributing eight hundred dollars to help fund the project.

"We have a half mile marked trail already,we will put a post about every 70 feet with a page of the story book," said Pangborn.

Just another way to exercise your mind, while getting in that daily walk. Plus, it's fun for the entire family.

Local teachers from Morrisonville and Cumberland Head Elementary will be lending a hand as well.

"They're actually going to help us pick out some of the good quality books for that age range. If it works really well we are hoping maybe in the future we will do poems for teenagers," said Pangborn.

The hope is having the stations installed by the end of June.

"The whole point is to get kids out on the trail, walking and being active and reading as they go," said Pangborn.

Other upgrades slated for Cadyville Recreation Park include a new pavillion.

"It's going to allow more programming, activities for families to gather. We do the supervisor's disc golf challenge there," said Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman.

The final design will come down to available funds.

"We are very thankful to the Clinton County Legislature for making an allocation of $8500 from the tobacco settlement funds. Of course we are trying to work in a public/private partnership to try to bring those funding levels up as well," said Cashman.

Cashman is hopefully the facility will be operational fall 2017.

One of the last major upgrades will be to construct a dog park in East Morrisonville.

"The town of Plattsburgh currently doesn't have any dog parks, any where in the town," said Melanie Defayette the Recreation and Youth Services Director.

With several hundred dogs registered. this will offer your fur baby a place to get off leash and socialize.

"We are going to have a man made water hole, which is nice for dogs to play in. It's going to be a joint partnership between us and Schuyler Falls," Defayette said.

The fence is expected to enclose the dog park by June, with a grand opening shortly after.
