Burlington City Council Adopts New Fair and Impartial Policing Policy

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Burlington City Council has approved a revised Fair and Impartial Policing Policy at its meeting Monday night.

It passed by a majority in an 11-1 vote.

In the new policy, officers will not enforce federal immigration laws, or ask a subject's immigration status.

However, the city cannot restrict the sharing of such information with the federal government if they have it.

Leaders say the city is also compliant with Attorney General Jeff Sessions' memo on sanctuary cities, which said cities refusing to comply with the federal government could lose funding.
