Burlington City Councilor Proposes New Garbage Ordinance

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Some Burlington city councilors want to clean up the streets by expanding a rule about recycling.

City Councilor Max Tracy is leading the charge to change the city's garbage ordinance.

He wants to expand the requirement for covered recycling bins at multi-unit residential buildings.

Landlords are already required to purchase them if there are ten or more units.

Tracy's proposed ordinance change would gradually expand that to buildings with fewer units.

"We're seeing more folks recycling these days. So we want to provide them with the opportunity to do so in a way that doesn't adversely affect our neighborhoods with trash getting blown around and especially in the winter when it gets stuck in snow banks and the snow banks and we see a lot of gross, kind of, soggy trash in the neighborhoods," said Tracy.

The city council heard the first reading on the change Monday night.
