Officials say Yogeswari Khadka, 32, was attacked with a meat cleaver around 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Police say she was hit on her hands, arms and skull, and died from her injuries.

The woman's mother, Thulsa Rimal, 54, was also hurt, suffering injuries to her head.  Rimal is in critical but stable condition at UVM Medical Center, according to a release from police.

Police say the couple's eight year-old child was at school at the time, and was not hurt.

Authorities believe it happened in a home on 72 Hyde St., before it went out to the street, where several neighbors saw what happened.  One man with a gun attempted to intervene, and held the suspect off for a moment, according to police.

Police called EMS and he was transported to UVM Medical Center, where his father in law states he was voluntarily admitted for a mental health evaluation.

Upon his request, he was discharged Thursday, the day of the attack.
