Burlington Recieves $500,000 to Develop New Waterfront Park

Burlington, Vt. - The city of Burlington will be developing a new park on the shore of Lake Champlain after receiving a federal grant, announced Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch.

Burlington was selected for a $500,000 Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program competitive grant from the National Park Service, according to a release from Leahy's Office.

The delegates say the money will be used to buy 12 acres on the lakefront, which will eventually be connected by trails to two other parks.

"Our local community parks contribute much to our quality of life in Vermont. They are part of our social and economic infrastructure and add to our physical wellbeing," said a statement from the Vermont Congressional Delegation.

"Having a healthy urban environment with a well-designed and maintained network of city parks is a vibrant component of any city's civic foundation... If we want to stay healthy, connecting with nature and getting outdoors in our local parks is a good early step, for Vermonters young and old," the statement continued.

Burlington was one of 22 cities to receive an ORLP grant, and the program is also funded through the Department of Interior's Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), stated officials.

The LWCF is financed by royalty fees earned from corporate resource development on federal lands and not taxpayer funds, according to the release.
