Police say they seized about 4,430 ounces of GBL and 676 ounces of GHB. GHB is a home-made drug produced in clandestine laboratories. GBL is a precursor used in the synthesis of GHB.
The investigation began after, police say, the Canada Border Services Agency intercepted five shipments from Shanghai. The shipments contained 338 ounce plastic bottles containing what was identified as GBL. Police say the shipments were addressed to a shipping company in Montreal and had Vancouver as their final destination.
Police arrested Joel Michael Toevs, 33, and Michael Marshall Delves, 35, both of Vancouver. The GHB was seized in the suspects' vehicle at the time of their arrest in Montreal. Both face a number of charges including importing, possession and production of a controlled substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
