Chief del Pozo Writes CNN Editorial on Pres. Trump's Remarks

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo says the President's remarks on policing, "will drive a deeper wedge between the police and its citizens whose mistrust of them has grown."

Chief del Pozo wrote an editorial that was posted on CNN Monday night.

It comes days after a speech given by President Trump that many viewed as an encouragement for police officers to be rough with the people they arrest.

"When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, and I said, 'Please don't be too nice,'" Trump said at Suffolk College on Long Island, NY Friday while making a speech about a proposed federal effort against the MS-13 street gang. "Like when you guys put somebody in the car, and you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put your hand over...I said, 'You can take the hand away, O.K.?'

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Monday, "I believe he (President Trump) was making a joke at the time."

In his editorial, del Pozo writes, "What troubles me the most about the President's remarks, however, is the way they patronized police officers. He has never held a wounded child in his arms or had to decide whether to punch or shoot a man with a knife. He has never had to race to the scene of a police shooting and choke on his feelings as he hunts for a suspect with precision and restraint. His remarks failed to take police work and its hazards seriously."
