Crews Battle Area Floodwaters

HINESBURG, Vt. - Crews across the state were working Friday to keep flooding at bay.

In South Burlington, the brook on Van Sicklen Road forced a brief road closure. In Hinesburg, crews worked along Hollow Road repairing culverts. In Essex North Williston Road was closed due to floodwaters from the Winooski River.

"Essex is not unique but it is a little bit, we still have 26 miles of gravel roads so when we get a lot of rain and things get saturated we have a lot of washouts along driveways and culverts,” said Dennis Lutz, Essex Public Works Director.

Lutz says with high intensity rain, like the region saw Thursday night, roads can be wiped out in an instant.

"Storms that blow through in a very narrow band where you can be standing here where it's dry and half a mile away it's coming through fairly heavily, those are the ones that will come through and damage a segment of roadway that we have to go end up doing major repairs,” explained Lutz.

Flood waters also came close to homes in a Hinesburg subdivision.

"My oldest son Brady woke me up around 6 o'clock this morning and he was like 'dad you've got to look out the window' I looked out the window and there was a lake out there... For the first time in my life, we have waterfront property,” said Paul Lasher, lives in Hinesburg.

As for the road closures, Lutz reminds folks to obey all signs and alerts as flooded roads are unpredictable.

Lutz said, "If the road is closed they need to respect that , more for their safety than anyone else's and if it happens at two o'clock in the morning there may not be anyone there to help you."

Folks looking to use the road as a connection between Essex and Williston will have to seek an alternate route as crews expect this road to be shut-down overnight.
