Crews Responding to Fire at Motel in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Crews responded to a fire Wednesday morning at the Blue Spruce Motel in Middlebury.

Officials say the fire broke out just after 7 a.m. Firefighters from multiple agencies responded, including Bristol, Vergennes, Salisbury, and New Haven.

“We needed a lot of manpower today; it was an extremely humid day, and a lot of heat,” said Middlebury Fire Chief David Shaw. “This is a high rise—a horizontal high rise—it takes a lot of work to get it out.”

The New Hampshire/Vermont Region of the American Red Cross says its currently helping 13 people from 6 families displaced by the fire.

“Well my mother told me—she was praying, and doing her thing—and she just kept hearing noises, coming from the attic. So, she went and talked to our maintenance man, Chuck, and he came in and realized a fire was going on,” said Udai Sharma, whose family owns the motel.

Sharma and his family have lived at the motel since 2011. He said they plan to rebuild.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
