Day Two of the Burlington Teachers Strike; Strike to Continue on Monday

Burlington, Vt. - Burlington teachers are picketing again on Friday morning as the teachers strike enters day two.

"It looks like we're going to be on strike again on Monday. We'll have teachers pretty much at all the schools on Monday. We're committed to this," said Fran Brock, President, Burlington Education Association.

We're working as hard as possible so we can resolve it. I understand the frustration from parents," said Yaw Obeng,Superintendent, Burlington School District.

Teachers and the board failed to come to an agreement after meeting for hours on Wednesday.

The union’s bargaining committee has accepted conditions for the high school level but not at the elementary level.  Officials say teachers want to be alleviated from non-teaching responsibilities, such as recess and lunch duty to allow more time for lesson planning.

The school board agreed to relieve them from door duties, but the board says it's important for teachers to be the ones students can come to with problems.

Erik Wells the Communications Specialist for the Burlington School District sent the following statement about where the board stood on Friday evening.

The community has been asking how this strike will come to an end. The Board told mediator Ira Lobel at the close of negotiations Wednesday it is ready and willing to meet with the BEA to continue talks to reach a multi-year contract agreement. Lobel, the mediator is hired by, and was mutually agreed upon, by both parties for his expertise and both sides are therefore reliant on him to shepherd this process. At this delicate stage, the mediator is regularly in touch with both parties and he will let the Board know when he feels another meeting would be productive based upon what he hears from the union. To meet for the sake of meeting, without the likelihood of success, would be counterproductive as it falsely raises community expectations.

Fran Brock, President of the Burlington Education Association spoke to the media on Friday morning about the latest on the strike.  You can see that video below.
