In Community Matters, we have a day for giving thanks, we have two days for finding deals.  Tuesday, is a day dedicated to giving back.  There are plenty of places to donate to, and volunteer for.

We've had Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  “I think people really want that opportunity to be involved in the community, and to give back to the community after that time of intense consumerism,” said Charlotte Blend.

It's why there's another special day you should know about, Giving Tuesday.

The Lund Family Center is a group dedicated to improving the lives of women, children, and families.  Blend says the organization is one of many that rely on volunteers, “We have volunteers coming in to read with our preschoolers, we have volunteers providing child care at our transitional housing facility,” she commented.

At Meals on Wheels in Essex, volunteers start cooking at 6 in the morning to prepare the 150 meals that get delivered each day.  “They’re unbelievably dedicated.  They're very caring, they go out of their way to make sure people have their meals,” said Karen Hershberg.

The Program Director says helping others is the ultimate payment.  “I think there's no better feeling than knowing you've somehow helped someone in your community, do something that they can't do for themselves,” said Hershberg.

Margaret Laughlin with the UVM Medical Center says you don't need a background in medicine to find a volunteer opportunity there.  “Volunteers' roles have changed over the years, but they've been a part of the organization for as far back as I can remember,” said Laughlin.

More than 700 people donate their time at the hospital.  They serve more than 90 thousand hours each year, helping staff and patients; bringing something special to the building.  “We call it the icing on the cake, it just provides some non-essential services to patients that may not be able to get them otherwise.  Volunteers add some of the special touches,” said Laughlin.

A day of giving to improve communities and improve lives.
