Citing a Joint Economic Committee report, Sanders says Vermont's student debt is sixth highest in the nation.

This year the state legislature and Governor Peter Shumlin passed a law that granted more financial aid to in-state students, essentially negating any tuition increase at a state institution.

UVM also says the amount of student debt at its school hasn't increase over the past four years and that one third of its students graduate with no debt at all.

Graduates with debt have various ways of paying back their loans. Some have help from parents while others are on a deferred payment plan.

The average Vermont student graduates with $28,890 of debt. 63% of them graduate with debt.
