PLATTSBURGH, Ny. - Aging seniors and their families are having a hard time finding services to meet their needs in the North Country. Organizers with Pine Harbour Assisted Living in Plattsburgh are working to expand services; hoping to help provide more seniors with some much needed help.
When Kevin Mulligan was searching for a home for his mom, he had a hard time finding something in the North Country.
“They really didn't have anything for Alzheimer’s,” said Mulligan.
He even expanded his search across the lake into Vermont to try to find services to meet his mom's needs.
“But as far as being in the immediate area there was nothing, no choices,” remembers Mulligan.
He kept looking and finally found Pine Harbour Assisted Living in Plattsburgh.
And Saturday Mulligan's giving back to the facility by hosting a talent show as part of a fundraiser to help expand its services.
“We've identified that there's really a need for more services for our seniors here locally,” said Maria Dias, the Marketing Director at Pine Harbour.
Dias says the goal is to create more opportunities for the seniors that live at the facility and for those who are living on their own in the community.
“The residents that live here are really the tip of the ice berg for the seniors who are out in the community that still need help,” said Dias.
Dias she says the baby boomers are growing older and the services in the community just can't keep up. So now Pine Harbour is working to fill that gap.
“We are still doing some feasibility studies to determine really what's going to be the most helpful and impactful to the community. There is some discussion about services at another location away from Pine Harbour in another area of town or building on to our community here,” said Dias.
And while there are no concrete plans yet residents living at Pine Harbour are excited for the changes.
“I don't know what the plans for expansion are, but it's a positive move and that's what we need in this town,” said Bill McBride, who lives at Pine Harbour with his wife.
Organizers are hoping to hold more fundraisers during the next year or so to raise enough money to expand services shortly thereafter. For more information on the facility and its fundraising efforts, click here.
