Family and Friends Remember Two Young Lives Cut Short in Essex Crash

ESSEX, Vt. - Two young lives were cut short late Tuesday night after a single vehicle crash in Essex.

Police say the driver, Nicholas Lizewski, 21, and his passenger, Kaylin Mitchell, 18, both of Essex, were killed in the crash that happened just before 11:30 p.m. on Fort Parkway at Ethan Allen Avenue.

Flowers were left at the crash site Wednesday morning as friends and family remember two young lives.

"It was awful, it felt like my world was crumbling down... I'm just shocked,” said Cassie Wilson, Nick’s friend.

Another friend Valerie Gratton added, "He was always there when someone else needed him, if I needed him for anything he'd always be there, he'd come to my house or I'd be welcome at his"

Kaylin Mitchell’s mom, Nicole Mitchell described her 18-year-old daughter as an amazing person with a big of heart who enjoyed spending time on Church Street in Burlington with her friends.

"She was just a beautiful girl who was absolutely loved by many... She had a lot of goals, she wanted to do some veterinary work so that is what she was going to be doing," said Mitchell.

Essex Police say several 911 calls came in shortly before midnight Tuesday regarding the crash.

"The vehicle was traveling eastbound initially went out of control, crossed the median, crossed the westbound lane and struck a utility pole on the west side of the highway,” said Lt. Ken Beaulieu, Essex Police.

Debris could still be seen scattered about the scene Wednesday and heavy damage to the utility pole, police say it's an indication of one thing.

Beaulieu said, "Preliminary investigation indicate that speed may have been a factor, we'll know more as the investigation continues."

A candlelit vigil was held at the crash site Wednesday evening. In the meantime, friends and family wait for answers.

"We mainly just want to know what was going through their heads at the time and what actually happened," said Wilson.

GoFundMe pages have been set-up for both families to help with funeral costs for Nick and Kaylin.
