FEMA to Assist Vermont Communities Impacted by Flooding

Seven counties in Vermont suffered substantial damage from flash flooding at the end of June and the start of July this year. The counties include Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Orange, Rutland, Washington, and Windsor.

Governor Scott announced this past Thursday President Trump signed off on the major disaster declaration. This will allow communities and public utilities in those counties to receive 75% federal reimbursement on storm related costs.

One town that was hit especially hard was the town of Norwich, Vermont. According to town manager Herbert Durfee, the damage from July 1st was worse than Tropical Storm Irene.

He attributes the excessive damage this go around to the debris left in streams, brooks, and culverts from Tropical Storm Irene in late August 2011.

Norwich Public Works has estimated the damage to the dollar amount of two million dollars.

"Within a 72 hour period after an emergency we have the ability to go our and make corrections on that emergency basis. Getting the funds from FEMA to reimburse us for that staff time, equipment time, materials that we had to purchase," said Durfee.

Durfee explains Turnpike Road, Beaver Meadow Road, along with countless driveways were washed out. The bulk of the work that is remaining will be put out to bid because the town simply doesn't have the equipment or manpower.

Durfee hopes that all projects will be completed before the start of the winter. But that will all come down to have fast construction bids can go out.
