GREENSBORO, VT - A new performing arts theater takes center stage in the Northeast Kingdom.
The Highland Center for the Arts is set to officially open it's doors on Friday.
Valdine Hall, a manager for HCA, says theater has always played a role in Greensboro.
"A local woman from Craftsbury, Ms. Gene Simpson who eons go, she would do Shakespeare every summer and so it’s been sort of part of the thread of the community right from the beginning."
Now the Northeast Kingdom Community has it's own Vermont version of the English playwright's "Globe Theater."
"This is roughly based on the Globe, the overall design of the theater itself," says Hall.
She says the $14 million state of the art facility was made possible by a generous benefactor with ties to the area.
There's just a few more finishing touches left before Friday night's grand opening of what Hall envisions as a Community theater.
"Any of the school events that happen here are free events, so it’s for the community and it's to enrich the lives of people who may not venture out."
The goal is that this center becomes a popular space for Greensboro as well as well as the surrounding towns and communities.
"We want to be able to expand and have community members from other towns, you know come in," says Hall.
Patrons of the Arts will likely pour in but not just for the plays.
The 220 plus seat theater will also boast an art gallery and cafe all under one roof.
“It’s going to be a social point for people and that was sort of the idea was to get people out and to get them out doing things year round and not just during the summer months."
The grand opening for the Highland Center for the Arts begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
The center will kick off Friday evening with a dance party starring Burlington's funk-rock band, Renegade Groove. All of the weekend events are free and open to the public.
