Keeping the Light of a Burlington Teen Alive

Vigil held for Christian Kibabu, Who Drowned in Lake Champlain

Burlington, Vt - Friends returned to Oakledge Park in Burlington Wednesday night, to remember a young high school student who lost his life in the waters of Lake Champlain Monday.

Christian Kibabu went to Burlington High School. His school guidance counselor says the 17-year-old had dreams of going to college.

A few teens who knew Christian put together the vigil through social media. At least a hundred people met at the park Wednesday night, lighting candles and keeping his memory alive.

"It's hard to believe, like we had pick up this morning, and I was just like kind of expecting him to be there, and he's just not there, it's hard to deal with,” classmate Niels Arentzen said.

Another classmate, Tanaya Walker, says she struggled to go to her job when she heard the news.

"When I found out it was actually Christian, I broke down, and I was at work, and I just couldn't do it,” Walker said. “I started crying for hours, I don't know, I think we've all cried so much that we can't really cry that much any more.”

Many tears were shed for Christian.

Students say the school is planning to retire the number Kibabu wore on his soccer jersey.

Kibabu is the third person whose life was lost in the water this week. Police say 11-year-old Ali Muhina died after falling into the Winooski River Tuesday. Last week, police recovered Cynthia Whalen’s body in Colchester after a 3-day search.
