Leahy Comments on Confederate Statues

BURLINGTON, Vt - Senator Patrick Leahy was in Burlington Thursday attending the  North East Regional Idea Conference.

While he was there to talk about cuts to national funding, Local 22 asked the Senator what he thought about President Trump's controversial remarks about Charlottesville and confederate statues that are being taken down following an increase in white nationalism.

"Keep in mind that these statues were put up to honor people who are committing treason and committing treason." Said Senator Leahy. "I have no sympathy for such statue."

Senator Leahy also responded to the president's tweets about Charlottesville and white supremists groups.

"We fought Nazis in World War II, losing thousands and thousands of brave men and women to save democracy. You don't praise people who are trying to bring back Nazism."
