Light the Night in Burlington

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Now is your chance to light up the night in honor of those who have lost their battle against cancer and those that are still fighting. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk comes to Burlington for its ninth year this Friday, Sept. 22.

The walk through Burlington’s Church Street Market Place raises funds for cancer treatment, patient support services and pioneers the most promising cancer research.

Here in Burlington, the Light The Night Co-Chair, Tina Bissonette was impacted by cancer personally. Her husband Joe was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2013, starting treatment on Valentine’s Day.

“I had some issues along the way and went into remission for a few months, and then unfortunately the cancer came back for a second time, and I started treatment again the next Valentine’s day believe it or not,” Joe shared.

After about a year and a half of different treatments and target immune therapies, Joe ended up getting a stem cell transplant.

“I’ve just had my two year anniversary in August, and I’m happy to say two years in remission,” Joe said.

Both Tina and Joe will proudly be walking on Friday night, with two different colored lanterns. Tina will hold a red lantern, which represents a cancer supporter, and Joe will sport a white one, representing a cancer survivor. Many people will also be holding gold lanterns, honoring those who lost their fight.

Registration for the Light the Night Walk begins at 6 p.m. on Friday at Edmunds Middle School in downtown Burlington. The walk is a little over a mile. There will also be a silent auction held at the middle school.

There is no deadline for registration. When you register you automatically get a lantern. You can register here or at the event.

“It’s great for kids or families, or even corporate teams, and just a great way for us to try and raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society,” Tina said.
