Longtime Champlain Valley Fair Volunteers Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary

Al and Sharon Laplante's 50th wedding anniversary is August 26

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. - The Champlain Valley Fair has been going strong for decades, and, so has one Vermont couple.

Al and Sharon Laplante have both worked at the fair for years.

Their wedding anniversary happens during the "Ten Best Days of Summer," and they wouldn't have it any other way.

Al has been working at the fair since he was a kid, but started volunteering as a traffic director and ticket taker over 20 years ago.

His wife Sharon has been going to the fair since she was a kid, but the two didn't meet until 1965.

"He was working at a garage, and I went there to get my gas, and we just got to be talking and friends and then it went from there," said Sharon.

Two years later, they were married. If you've done the math, you've probably figured out they've been married for 50 years. Al and Sharon's anniversary is Saturday.

The 50 year wedding anniversary isn't the only milestone for the couple- Al and Sharon have worked at the fair together for over a decade.

"I made a mistake by coming with him one night to a meeting, and they needed help, and after I retired, I had another part time job, but I still do this. It's just an enjoyment. I enjoy doing this; meeting up with people and being with people," said Sharon.

In previous years, Al would work traffic, and wouldn't see Sharon much while working.

This year, he's only a few steps away from the love of his life. Sharon sells the tickets, and Al takes them at the gate.

Local 22 & Local 44 News reporter Alexandra Leslie asked what the secret to a long and happy marriage was.

"I learned years and years ago, to shut my mouth and let it go, you know, let her have the last word! (laughs) it works out pretty well that way," said Al.

They joke, but explained why they're so happy.

"He is considerate, and he is loveable, and he is my best friend," said Sharon.

"And she is my best friend, definitely. Couldn't ask for a better lady, I'll tell you that. 50 years show it, you know, I really do, I love her. Always have and always will," said Al.

Al and Sharon work at the Red Gate at the fair.

If you see them, make sure to wish them a happy anniversary.
