Celebrating National Mint Julep Day with Leunig's Bistro

COLCHESTER, Vt. - National Mint Julep Day falls every year on May 30. In celebration of this special day Burlington’s Leunig’s Bistro is showing us how to make the perfect Mint Julep.

Ashley Ethier from Leunig’s uses all Vermont ingredients to make this special minty cocktail. She is using bourbon from Smuggler’s Notch, along with mint freshly grown from South Burlington, and of course Vermont Maple Syrup.

Ethier uses 3/4th an ounce of simple mint syrup and a 1/4th ounce of maple syrup mixed with the bourbon. The special secret when garnishing with fresh mint, Ethier says, is to clap the mint in your palms to release the natural oils.

Mint Julep is best when paired with dessert. Ethier suggests pairing it with chocolate or fruit. It’s also the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Derby Day is the most popular day for Mint Julep Ethier says.
