INTERACTIVE: States with the Highest and Lowest Taxes

A new report by the Tax Foundation highlighted state and local tax burdens by residents of each state during FY 2011. 

The report also broke down in-state and out-of-state payments and income for residents in each state. 

Click on the map to see how a state ranked based on its state-local tax burden as share of state income. States with lighter shading had a less burden than states with darker colors.

Greatest Burden:
  1. New York
  2. New Jersey
  3. Connecticut
  4. California
  5. Wisconsin

Least Burden:
  1. Wyoming
  2. Alaska
  3. South Dakota
  4. Texas
  5. Louisiana
