WASHINGTON -  House Speaker John Boehner wants Pope Francis to address a joint meeting of Congress.

In a letter to the pontiff, Boehner said the invitation was on behalf of the bipartisan leadership of the house and the senate.

Boehner, who is Catholic, said the pope's teaching are "rooted in the joy of the gospel."

The Vatican has not announced any plans for the pope to visit the United States.

Thursday marked one year since Pope Francis became the leader of the Catholic Church. He marked the occasion with a simple message to his nearly four million twitter followers, "please pray for me."
