TOREZ, UKRAINE - President Barack Obama is calling for an immediate cease-fire in Ukraine to allow access to the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight 17.

During remarks at the White House on Friday, President Obama offered condolences for the nearly 300 passengers and crew aboard the plane.

"Nearly 300 innocent lives were taken, men, women, children, infants who had nothing to do with the crisis in Ukraine. Their deaths are an outrage of unspeakable proportions," Obama said.

President Obama says at least one American citizen is among the victims.

The plane crashed on Thursday, on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

U.S. intelligence officials believe pro-Russian rebels likely fired a surface-to-air missile.
