EAST LANSING, MICH. - It's official, President Barack Obama has put pen to paper for the new farm bill.

The $956 billion bill expands federal crop insurance and also ends direct payments to farmers.

As for Vermont farmers, the bill will help bring back the food export program, which helps Vermont companies expand to foreign markets.

The president also says this bill will help everyone.

"Despite the saying, the Farm Bill is not just about helping farmers," President Obama said. "Secretary Vilsack calls it a jobs bill. An innovation bill. An Infrastructure bill. A research bill. A conservation bill. It's like a Swiss Army knife."

The Farm Bill also makes cuts to certain programs including food stamps, with more than $8 billion in cuts over the next 10 years.
