A federal judge has ruled the government can read your email, even if it's stored on a computer outside the U.S.

The ruling stems from a case against Microsoft, which did not want to comply with U.S. law enforcement search warrants.

Those warrants demanded customer emails on servers in Ireland.

The company said the warrants violated privacy protections, and that the warrants were only valid in the U.S.

Tech companies have quietly complied with government surveillance orders, mostly because U.S. law prohibits them from revealing such requests.
