The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calculated the rates of prescribing opioid medications across the United States.
The CDC says overprescribing of opioid pain relievers can result in adverse health outcomes, including fatal overdoses. The report will help health officials locate areas where prescribing patterns may need further evaluation.
The report looked at opioid prescription rates, long-acting/extended-release opioid pain relievers, high-dose opioid pain relievers, and Benzodiazepines prescriptions. States in dark red ranked higher in overall opioid prescription rates per 100 persons, whereas states in dark blue ranked lower.
