Drowning in the Pemigewasset River

WOODSTOCK, NH - A 19-year-old man drowned in the Pemigewasset River Sunday.

New Hampshire State Police, along with Marine Patrol and Woodstock Police Department got a call about a swimmer in distress shortly after 1:30 p.m. south of the Route 175 bridge in Woodstock.

Officials say the victim from Dracut, MA was swimming in the river with five others.

He jumped into the water in an area with a swift moving current and was overcome by the water.

Several witnesses attempted to rescue him, although they were unsuccessful.

Members of the Woodstock Police Department arrived on scene and located the victim in approximately twelve feet of water.

They were able to recover him from the river and CPR was immediately performed.

The victim was ultimately pronounced deceased.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The incident remains under investigation by NHSP-Marine Patrol and Woodstock Police Department.
