New York Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Selling Heroin, Cocaine in Rutland

Burlington, Vt. - Joel Joyce, 27, of Brooklyn, New York was sentenced to ten years in prison for leading a conspiracy to sell large amounts of cocaine base and heroin in Rutland County, according to the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont.

Officials say a federal judge convicted Joyce in December of conspiracy to sell heroin and 28 grams or more of cocaine in the Rutland area.

Joyce will also have to serve four years of supervised release, authorities said.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont states that Joyce used co-conspirators from Brooklyn to bring heroin and crack cocaine by bus and other means from Brooklyn to the Rutland area. Joyce then used drug addicts in the Rutland area to distribute the drugs and collect money, officials said.

According to authorities, Joyce and his co-conspirators would often stay with addicts in Rutland and West Rutland and use their homes as bases of operation. He would pay the addict hosts heroin and crack cocaine for helping him.

At Joyce's trial, the government presented evidence that Joyce made tens of thousands of dollars selling drugs in the Rutland area and often managed the drug trafficking operations in Rutland by cell phone while he was in Brooklyn, officials say.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Vermont State Police Drug Task Force.
