New York State Attorney General: Gift Card Scam Targeting Seniors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The New York State Attorney General's office is warning people about a new gift card scam that targets seniors.

This latest heist is similar to the grandparent scam, where someone claiming to be a family member calls and asks for money.

But instead of wiring the funds, they tell you to go out and buy thousands of dollars in gift cards—  and then call them back with the card numbers.

To avoid falling victim, keep in mind you should never give out personal information on the phone, especially to a stranger.

Never give gift card numbers over the phone, and if you get a call like this report it to police.
