The New York Board of Regents is expected to vote Tuesday on a proposal that would make cheerleading an interscholastic sport in the state.

The board, which sets policy for public schools, gave
preliminary approval Monday.

If the proposal passes, cheerleading would become uniform across the state. It would require coaches to be properly trained and schools to follow common safety standards.

If approved, the recommendation would take effect with the 2014-15 winter season.

Cheerleading is a sport in Vermont. Essex won Division I in 2014, Poultney won Division II.
