PLATTSBURGH, Ny. - Bicyclists geared up and rode around Plattsburgh for a good cause. It was all part of the 'Mayor's Cup Bike Ride' to help raise money for the CVPH Medical Center's Foundation.

Celebrating its 10th year the ride got an early start Sunday morning.
Riders had the option of choosing three different courses: a 70 mile ride around Plattsburgh.

“We had about a dozen people who were committed to doing that big long stretch and we are very proud of them,” said Kerry Haley, Executive Director of CVPH’s Foundation.

A 50 mile stretch.

“And the wind was a little rough but overall it was awesome,” said Zariah White, a participant.

Or a 22 mile loop.

“I’m going to do the 22, which says I'm not in very good shape,” joked John Prim, a participant.

The event raises money for the hospital's travel fund.

“The travel funds that we have help patients who need some sort of a specialized care that they can't get here at CVPH. If they meet our income guidelines then we can provide them assistance to travel to the hospital or healthcare center that they need to get to,” said Haley.

Haley says each year they help about 50 - 60 families with travel expenses. She says each individual can qualify for up to one thousand dollars in assistance and it helps pay for any travel expenses like gas or a hotel room.

“Often they are going to Boston, even New York City. But we have folks who even go out west, whether its experimental treatment that they need or some sort of special center that they have to go to. They are really going all over the country,” said Haley.

Along with the 'Travel Funds' Haley says the foundation also host many programs that encourage people to live healthy lifestyles.

“The money that we raise is invested back into the hospital for patient and staff needs, whether its equipment, education and those sorts of things,” said Haley.

And those who participated in the ride say this was a great way to get some exercise and give back to the community.
