PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Volunteers took to the streets of Plattsburgh on Friday to raise money for World War II veterans.

The North Country Honor Flights were trying to raise $5,000. This is the first time the group held a street fundraiser like this one.

Each Honor Flight costs $14,000.

The organization must raise half that  in order to send veterans to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. The memorial opened just 12 years ago, so many of those veterans who served, haven't been able to visit on their own.

"They're passing away at the rate of 400 a day," Vietnam War Veteran Gregory Lee said. "So there's a rush to get this accomplished before they move on to their next mission."

The next North Country Honor Flight takes off next month with 17 veterans.
