Newport Police: Elementary Student Offered Ride by Suspicious Stranger

Newport, Vt. - Newport Police say a child had a suspicious interaction with a stranger on her way to school on Thursday morning between 7:30 and 7:50 a.m.

According to police, the child who is in elementary school was crossing the street at the intersection of East Main Street and Western Avenue when she was allegedly offered a ride.

Authorities say the vehicle was described as a dark blue van that was missing its rear windows. According to a media release, the driver was described to have long blonde hair and orange tinted glasses.

Police say the girl refused the ride and the van drove away.

“This young woman did exactly the right thing by refusing to take a ride from a stranger and then reporting the incident to an adult,” Chief DiSanto said.

“We are working with our law enforcement partners to investigate this interaction and identify potential suspects,” added DiSanto.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Newport Police at (802) 334-6733.
