St. Albans, Vt. - Police say one man is dead following a crash between a utility van and a Casella truck on Fairfield Hill Road in St. Albans.
According to police, the crash happened on Friday morning at 123 Fairfield Hill Road when a utility van headed northbound collided with the back of the truck.
"My son woke us up this morning around 6:30 because he heard a loud sound initially he thought it was a thunder… I was just concerned if someone was hurt ," said Meaghan Malboeuf who lives across the road from where the crash occurred.
Police say Patrick Wedge, of St. Albans, a Casella employee was pinned between the two vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We're all extremely sad today and grief stricken. It's a tough job, the people who go out there everyday and do it for us deserve to go home every night... Our industry has worries about this and we plead with the public to be extra careful with our folks doing this service in communities," said Joe Fusco, Casella Waste Systems Vice President.
Police say the driver of the van was Ben Smyth of Fairfield. He was wearing a seat belt and is being treated at Northwestern Medical Center for serious injures.
The other Casella employee Brian Record, of Colchester was able to jump out of the way and was treated for minor injuries.
Police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
"It is a pretty significant slope going down, some people do go a little fast but we haven't had any real problems with you know accident stuff, in the winter time yes but not during the summertime," said Cpl. Paul Morits, St. Albans Police Department.
