Beekmantown, N.Y. - New York State Police say a 72-year-old man drowned on Lake Champlain off of Point Au Roche in Beekmantown on Thursday morning.
According to police, Peter Reed, 72, and a friend were using paddle boards and both fell off the boards and fell into the water. Police say the pair wasn’t wearing life jackets at the time.
A media release says, due to high winds Reed’s board was pushed away from him and he had to tread water. A witness nearby tried to help with a boat and threw a life jacket to Reed and tried to help his friend. Reed went underwater and did not come back up.
Rescue crews found Reed’s body about 40 minutes later and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officials say an autopsy is scheduled for Friday. Police say the incident is still under investigation.%
