People Prepare for Winter

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Even though it's still July, some people are preparing for the winter months ahead.

“It's been getting kind of busy,” said Laurie Paparo, the Office Manager at Vermont Pellet Store

Paparo says this year she's seeing more people buying enough wood pellets to last the entire winter rather than waiting it out and buying month to month.

“I think people are a little crazed still because of the crunch that we saw last spring. After the long cold winter people used more pellets then they had in the past,” said Paparo.

That crunch she's talking about was the pellet shortage some Vermonters struggled with last winter.\

“We kind of rationed a little bit just to make sure as many people had heat or fuel as we could,” said Paparo.

But not everyone is heading out to stock up early. Amelia Chapman says she and her husband usually wait to buy the three tons they'll need for the winter.

“We just wait. October-ish is when we buy them. I think that's early enough where we don't need them but we know that we have them for the upcoming winter,” said Chapman.

Chapman says she finds it easier to buy in bulk because then you'll have what you need on hand.

“I guess its good planning right,” Chapman said.

And for those that are planning early, Paparo says it's a good idea because sometimes delivering pellets during a snow or ice storm is difficult.

“It’s a factor that we consider, so the people who stock up now we are so happy to see them and its less we have to worry about in October,” said Paparo.

And as much as we don't want to admit it October is only a few months away.

Of course heating your home with a wood pellet stove is just one way to go. We checked in with some propane dealers who say they are already filling contracts and people are scheduling deliveries; all gearing up for the winter months ahead.
