It was the second time in the first week of March where the area had new record lows! The coldest spot in northern New England and New York was Saranac Lake, NY at -28F. In fact the Adirondack Regional Airport (which represents Saranac Lake on our maps) was the coldest spot in the lower 48!
For more low temperatures, follow this link courtesy the National Weather Service:
The "warmest" spot was the southern Connecticut River Valley closer to the 0 degree mark, but also the peaks of the nearby mountains! Mount Washington and Mount Mansfield had overnight low temperatures of -13 and -8 degrees respectively. A temperature inversion set up where the mountains were warmer than the valleys, because the cooling air became dense and sank into the lowest elevations, leaving the high peaks warmer. Temperatures will get warmer, closer to the average 30s we typically get in early March starting Friday.
