BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders says he is saddened by Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki's resignation.

Sanders is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

Sanders has been defending Shinseki throughout this controversy.
On Friday he continued calling him an american hero and says overall Shinseki had done a lot to turn around the VA.

"He has done some good things. I think in many ways he was betrayed by people as he indicated who were not honest to him," says Sanders.

Sanders says the new VA leadership must transform the culture at the VA and establish accountability. He says the goal of the VA must be to provide the highest-quality health care possible to vets.

"Clearly right now short term we've got to make sure that every veteran on a waiting list gets health care as quickly as possible. We've got legislation that's coming up this week that I think can facilitate that."

Besides the internal probes of the scandal already under way, Sanders says the justice department is also involved and that if crimes have been committed the people who committed them must be punished.
