Search Continues for Missing Colchester Woman

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Cynthia Whalen was last seen Sunday night by friends and family at the end Niquette Bay Road in Colchester. Police say the 52 year-old woman wandered away from the camp she was staying at around 10:30 p.m., she hasn’t been seen since.

On Monday afternoon, Whalen’s shoes were found by search near a beaver dam not far from where she was last seen. Police say they appeared to have washed up there.

"We have air assets from the U.S. Border Patrol, a drone from the Grand Isle Sheriff that went up to search the area, we have marine assets from Colchester Police and Colchester Technical Rescue, the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue team and we've got K-9 units from New England K-9,” Lt. Doug Allen, Colchester Police Department.

Search teams covered a large area of land Monday and returned to the water in the afternoon.

Allen said, "The terrain is difficult, despite the rain we've had the swampy are is somewhat clear, we feel pretty confident that area has been searched well with the use of our air assets."

Police say there are still a lot of unknowns as to why or how Whalen vanished and say there is no evidence of foul play.

"Its Fourth of July weekend so there was some alcohol involved in this but we don't feel it was a strong factor but it certainly is a factor,” said Douglas.

As of Monday evening, police continued their search. Vermont State Police were searching the bay using sonar equipment.

Whalen is described as being 52 years-old, 5’8”, medium build, blonde hair and was last seen wearing khaki cargo-style shorts with a tan shirt.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Colchester Police Department.
