Swanton Home to Two New Swans

Swanton, Vt. - Swanton is now home to two new swans. They were welcomed Friday evening.

The town wasn't named after the creature, rather after Captain Swanton from the Revolutionary War.

Swans though are the official mascot of the small town.

The two birds are named Sam and Betty, after Uncle Sam and Queen Elizabeth.  Swans have been at home in Swanton for 56 years.

"This is Swanton, you look around our community, our logo is a muted swan. We have a history and a culture of having the swans here, so we worked really hard to plead that with the Fish and Wildlife," said Suzanne Washburn.

Although today's swans have no ties to the originals, all swans are referred to as "royal."
