The Vermont Memorial Cemetery Expands on Veterans Day

Randolph Center, Vt. - Veterans Day was a special day for the Vermont Memorial Cemetery on this year as folks were also celebrating the cemetery’s completed expansion.

Days after the conclusion of a turbulent election people gathered at the cemetery in Randolph Center with a common goal, honoring the men and women who have served or are serving in the military.

"That was outstanding such a small area where everyone was singing the national anthem... That is what makes this country so great,” said Major General Steven Cray, Vermont National Guard.

The 12-acre expansion includes a new public information center, a new maintenance facility and more than 1,600 new burial plots.

"What better day to celebrate another benefit for veterans... It's been a year we have been working very hard on it so it is the perfect day to commemorate and do it for them,” said Robert Burke, Vermont Office of Veteran Affairs Director.

Governor-Elect Phil Scott was on hand for the ribbon cutting. Veterans Day hits close to home for Scott whose father served in World War II.

Scott said, "He was severely injured during the D-Day invasion, was a double amputee and came back to Vermont to raise a family... Unfortunately we lost him when I was 11 so he was a true patriot."

The new burial plots include 410 pre-placed crypts for in-ground casket burials, 390 in-ground cremains and 840 columbarium.

"We owe them those who are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect this country, we owe them everything that they have learned,” said Cray.

Burke added, "It is a beautiful place as you can see and many of them are throughout the country and it is an incredible benefit to know that it’s not a final expense that your family is going to come up with"

The expansion was funded by the national cemetery administration and allows for it to be in operation year-round.
