“Our goal is that no veteran is waiting for care that they need,” said Deborah Amdur, Medical Center Director.
Amdur says an audit team from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has already visited. And the team will likely stop by again.
“We think it’s a good opportunity to get a fresh set of eyes on our processes and many of them have other experiences in other VAs so they bring best practices with them,” said Amdur.
The VA Hospital in White River Junction serves about 25 thousand veterans in our region and Amdur says the wait time here is fairly short.
“Over 90% get an appointment within 14 days,” said Amdur.
But she says there are some areas of care that have a bit of a longer wait.
“We are offering opportunities for those veterans - when it’s available to get the service in the community at VA's expense,” said Amdur.
Amdur says they always have same day access for veterans that need to be seen immediately. And some veterans we spoke agree the service is good.
“I have excellent service here. I never have to wait long. I mean some departments maybe only have one practitioner so you might have to wait a little bit longer,” said Kevin Stuart, a veteran.
“They say this hospital is great and good, depends who you are,” said James Miller, a veteran.
“I only started coming down here about 12-13 years ago and I’ve seen a lot of improvements over the years,” said Dale Pierson, a veteran.
Amdur says as the audits continue she believes the services provided to those who've served our country will only continue to improve.
“I know there are places where perhaps there isn't good access. and we are certainly being asked about that ourselves with opportunities to get additional funds and potentially staff to make sure that we have the access we want,” said Amdur.
