Vermont Congressional Delegation Safe Following Shooting in VA

WASHINGTON -

All three members of Vermont’s congressional delegation are safe following the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia, that injured a congressman and several others, according to aides.

“Congressman (Peter) Welch was in his apartment and is safe,” said press secretary Kate Hamilton, in an email to Local 22 & Local 44 Wednesday morning.

Senator Patrick Leahy was not in the area during the shooting, according to spokesman David Carle. Leahy Tweeted, “Our prayers with all the injured. And our deepest thanks–again–to the superb Capitol Police who protect all who work in or visit the Capitol.”

Senator Bernie Sanders is fine and was on Capitol Hill at the time of the shooting, according Sanders' spokesman Dan McLean.

"Our prayers go out for the full recovery of Rep. Scalise, the congressional aides and police officers who were injured. We've got to stop the violence," said Sanders in a written statement.

Police say Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise was shot and wounded by a man Wednesday morning at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandra, Virginia. Several other people were also wounded.
