WINOOSKI, Vt. - After many years of trying, the city of Burlington is now officially the owner of the Winooski One Hydro-Electric Plant.

The keys, or perhaps plugs in this case, were handed over to the city at a ceremony on Thursday.

Voters last march endorsed the deal. The city says it represents 8 percent of the city's power supply.

Burlington Electric Interim General Manager Neale Lunderville says it will keep electric rates affordable for years to come.

"It really does Burlington Electric's portfolio all in the importance of giving our customers a green portfolio one that keeps costs low and stable," Lunderville said. That's so they can enjoy the environmental piece but also the economic piece that this represents."

With the addition of the Winooski One facility, the city says it now sources renewable energy equal to 100 percent of its energy needs.
