Burlington, Vt.- There’s a chance of a new addition to the Burlington skyline.
Tuesday night Burlington's Development Review Board heard a pitch for a new residential building. It would be a six story, 23 unit apartment building with office space.
The building would sit at the parking lot on the corner of Main and Pine Street.
People are concerned adding more people to the area would make an already tight block more congested.
"I would like to see the impact 130 rooms and the traffic you're going to have coming down main street," said Owner of the Sunset House Bed and Breakfast Nancy Beaulieau.
Others are worried about limited parking.
"I park in the corporate plaza garage, I live there,” said local Burlington resident Barbara McGrew. “It's often full."
The design does call for a residential parking garage, but the traffic isn't the only concern.
Some of these buildings on Main Street, including the Sunset House Bed and Breakfast, are pretty old and some people are worried that if a six story apartment building gets built around the corner, that won't really mesh with the architecture.
"Just take a look at that corner, what it's going to look like,” said Sunset House Bed and Breakfast Owner Paul Beaulieau. “Look at the other corners, the other corners all blend in. this project is not going to blend in."
And compared to the other buildings in the area, this one would be significantly taller.
“This is like putting the statue of liberty out in one of our fields out here,” Beaulieau said. “You know it's just out of place."
Some people are optimistic of this idea.
The owner of Skirack across the street from the potential site says he wants more people living downtown to contribute to the community and boost the economy.
Because they didn't have enough members of the board present tonight, the meeting was unofficial. Any progress will be delayed until their next meeting on August 19th.
