ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt.- Come to the Champlain Valley Fair for food but save on admission by donating food. Nearly 153,000 people in Vermont rely on food shelves for their meals and you can help.

By bringing in one item of non-perishable food to the fair before 2:00pm on Thursday August 28 you are able to help the Vermont Foodbank stock their shelves and get in the fair for free. If you come after 2:00pm and bring your canned good you’ll get a $3 discounted ticket.

Last year the fair raised over 5,000 pounds of food and this year the goal is to beat it. Bring in an extra non-perishable item and get a $10 discount on a ride bracelet. Today at the fair you can help feed Vermont, save money and feed yourself.

A brand new vendor at the fair this year is The Little Grille, they’re known for their fresh non-traditional burgers like The Dirty Burger made with deep fried onion rings or the Brazilian Burger made with a surprising ingredient- peas and corn. The Little Grille began as a little grill on the side of the road in New Hampshire and now has multiple restaurants, but it’s their first time at the Champlain Valley Fair.

A five year regular at the fair is Don’s Place, mostly known for Moose Nutz. These nutz are a variety of fries smothered in different toppings like pork, coleslaw, barbeque sauce and topped with cheese.

Don Markham, owner and cook, says that people have referred to his Moose Nutz as the ugliest food at the fair, but ugliest looking doesn't lead to tasting ugly. His goal is to give people the most bang for their buck.

"We like to give you your monies worth, we like to give you an excellent product we cook everythign in front of you and we like to make sure you are happy and you're full," said Markham.

Be happy and full at the fair but don't forget to help give others the opportunity to be happy and full, bring in your canned goods on Thursday all day and donate to the Foodbank.
