BURLINGTON, Vt. - For the fifth year in a row, Fletcher Allen's Stroke Center is being praised by the American Heart Association.

The hospital received the gold plus performance achievement award, the only one in Vermont and northern New York to get it.

The group also received the Target Stroke Award, given for consistent exceptional treatment of acute stroke.

Although the stroke center doesn't have its own wing at Fletcher Allen, it's made up of several health care specialists from all fields.
"We collaborate with neurosurgeons, neuro-radiologists, as well as interns, and family practitioners to be able to get all the different aspects of care," Director of Fletcher Allen Stroke Program Mark Gorman, MD, said.

Doctor Gorman says it's so important to keep studying stroke. The cause of stroke in one third of patients is still unknown.
