Florida Man Sentenced for Running Fraudulent Tax Refund Scheme in VT

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - A Florida man was sentenced for a running fraudulent tax refund scheme in Vermont in 2010-2012. 

A press release says Craig Lee Workman, 42, obtained identification information for more than 120 people and then filed fraudulent income tax returns in their names. He claimed nearly a million dollars in tax refunds. 

On each of the returns he listed bank routing and account numbers for bank accounts he controlled in Florida and Vermont, and requested direct deposits of the claimed refunds. 

A press release says the IRS rejected the bulk of fake filings,but 23 got through.  More than $179,000 was deposited from the U.S. Treasury into Workman's bank accounts. 

Workman was was sentenced to 5 years and supervised release for 3 years. He was also ordered to repay the money after his release. 

Workman has a lengthy criminal history, mostly in Florida, dating  back to 20 years.
