It's National Volunteer Week and we thought we'd highlight some of our local volunteers.

College students Makayla Warren and Courtney Brunett have been spending 10 hours a week each at the American Cancer Society office in Williston, Vermont.

“Preparing kick-offs, the Relays, all of it,” explained Warren.

They're just 2 American Cancer Society volunteers of thousands spread across the country. Like so many others, volunteering there is personal.

“My uncle was diagnosed with brain cancer in October and it's something that's really close to my family,” explained Courtney Brunett. “Last May my grandfather died of cancer as well. So it's something that's been really close in my family and it's something that I knew that he would be proud of me if I worked here doing stuff like that."

“I would say volunteer because it's a great cause,” said Makayla Warren. “And it's really fun, quite frankly. So why not put your time into something good?"

With a relatively small staff, considering the scope of the American Cancer Society's mission, volunteers make its world go round.

“Actually the American Cancer Society is the largest voluntary health organization in the world. So our volunteers make this organization run,” said Relay for Life Senior Director Hilary Casillas.

Some are like Makayla and Courtney, donating their time in offices.

“There's kind of this atmosphere in the office, everyone's really excited to be here and genuinely cares about what they do,” said Brunett.

Others work in the field, volunteering at hospitals, lodges, even driving patients to treatment.

“Thank you! Thank you! We love our volunteers. We always need more. But we're so grateful for everything that they do,” said Casillas to the Cancer Society volunteers.

The Williston's team next big event is UVM’s Relay For Life being held April 25th and 26th.

National Volunteer Week is April 6-12.
